Jay Miller leads Team USA softball to win

In Honolulu, Missouri softball coach Jay Miller, coaching the USA Red select softball team, led the Americans to a 4-0 win over China in the 2001 U.S. Cup on June 25. USA finished the tournament as the only unbeaten team at 4-0.

Pitcher Catherine Osterman from Houston picked up the win against China, who finished the tournament at 2-2.

During the tournament, which began on June 20, USA defeated 2000 Olympic silver medalist Japan 1-0 and defeated bronze medalist Australia 4-0.

Former MU track star shines on international stage

Former Missouri all-American track star Derrick Peterson finished sixth in the men's 800-meter finals in the U.S.-Great Britain-Russia meet in Glasgow, Scotland, on July 1.

The middle distance runner's time of 1:51:01 was slow in comparison to his time of 1:47:34 at the USA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., a week prior to the&nbsp"meet in Glasgow. Peterson finished second in the USA championships.

Russian Yuriy Borzakovskiy ran a 1:48:05 to win. American Trinity Gray ran fifth at 1:50:03.

The Americans won the meet over Great Britain 135-131. Russia was third at 111.

MU's McBride&nbsp"wins second&nbsp"straight Missouri Amateur Championship

MU men's golfer Mark McBride defeated Len Johnson of Overland Park, Kan., to win his second straight Missouri Amateur Championship on June 24.

McBride, a Lebanon, Mo. native and a senior-to-be at MU, trailed by four holes heading into the back nine but came back to birdie five holes in the back nine.

McBride becomes the first man to win back-to-back titles since PGA Tour professional golfer Tom Watson won the Missouri Amateur Championship in 1970 and 1971.
