Police arrested a man and a juvenile accomplice who attacked a Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches employee on Friday, according to a news release from the Columbia Police Department.

William M. Marek and his partner "assaulted the victim and stole the food items he possessed," on the 300 block of Maplewood Drive, the release stated.

According to court documents, Marek and his codefendant ordered food to be delivered from Jimmy John's.

"Upon the delivery driver's arrival, Marek struck him in the face with a dumbbell," court documents stated.

Marek then stole the delivered food, the documents stated.

"This was an intended attack," Columbia Police Department Sgt. Ken Hammond said. The Jimmy John's employee sustained facial injuries and later underwent surgery Hammond said.

A Jimmy John's manager declined to comment.

The dumbbell was later recovered and identified by Marek.

Marek and the juvenile were arrested on the charges of first-degree robbery and armed criminal action.

Marek was also charged with second-degree burglary and three counts of felony stealing, according to court documents.

Marek, along with his juvenile codefendant, had also forced entry into a Marcy Motors dealership and stole three cars that were parked on the lot, according court documents.

Upon arrest, Marek directed police to the locations where the cars had been left.
