The Columbia Police Department is conducting special traffic detail this week through Saturday.

Police officers will be enforcing all hazardous moving violations, intoxicated driving and seatbelt violations, a CPD news release stated.

This traffic detail is funded by a grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation and similar traffic details have been held in the past.

CPD Sgt. Shelley Jones said there would be extra officers on patrol each day as part of the traffic detail.

Jones said officers would be looking for moving violations and intoxicated drivers. She said the officers working during the day would have less of a chance of catching drivers under the influence than officers working at night. Jones said catching hazardous moving violations at night is beneficial because it often leads to arrests for driving while intoxicated.

Jones said special traffic details are good for Columbia.

"Any time we can slow down motorists, it's beneficial," Jones said.

There will be four extra officers on patrol per day and six extra officers on patrol Thursday and Friday.
