The wrap-up for wrapping up in winter

Published Dec. 11, 2009

You trudged through snow and ice in January, frolicked in the fantastic weather in April and rejoiced when the scorching summer finally came around. You basked in the sunlight by the pool or even shared a hookah with friends under early fall stars. Now say hello to your long-lost friend, winter.

It's a time of merry spirits and curling up in the warmth of your boo to watch the snow fall. Fortunately for the fashion world, it's also a time when people bundle themselves in the latest fashions to avoid the frigid air. As the transition from fall to winter begins, layering should be key in your winter wardrobe.

Guys, start with a warm, solid v-neck sweater. It might be a beautiful day in the neighborhood, but leave the Mr. Rogers sweater for Fred Rogers alone. Pick out a neutral color so you keep your options open when matching. After the v-neck, you should invest in a great printed shirt. Plaids, polka dots and fabrics with subtle stripes always complement this look. If pushing the envelope is your thing, throw on a cardigan instead of a v-neck or a cool, contrasting bow tie.

Remember where you are, geographically, when you're getting dressed. This is the Midwest, not Antarctica. No need for the Eskimo parkas. Outerwear can be stylish and serve a purpose at the same time. The best choices for winter outerwear show throughout time: trench coats from the turn of the 20th century, duffel coats from the mod '60s and long-standing classic pea coats.

How can you mix up these styles? First, pick your style of coat. Take the extra five minutes to try it on to ensure a good fit. What print is it? Does it have features such as a metallic shine or buttons made from bone or ivory? Think big on the small details! Subtle things such as brass gold buttons on a navy pea coat make you the man, or woman, in charge.

Ladies and gents, let's establish a basic rule for winter footwear: no flip-flops! Why would you want to get frostbite just to be "fashionable" while romping around in a pair of $5 shoes? Not smooth.

You can bury your feet in the depths of the ever-famous UGG boots or lace up a pair of hunting boots for warmth, but why do that when there are warm, more attractive options available? There is nothing wrong with UGGs, but try to break the mold if you want to look good wearing them. Knit UGGs are available in a multitude of colors with great antique buttons up the side. Although UGGs aren't such a hot commodity for guys, try to buy thicker socks with a print (argyle, anyone?). Wear them with a great pair of wing-tipped oxfords or low-profile sneakers. If you've got the cajones, slip into a pair of biker or "Beatle" boots, made famous by Lennon, McCartney, Starr and Harrison. Extra warmth exuding superb style, guaranteed.

Although you might want to hibernate until spring in the warmth of your fuzzy Christmas blanket and striped Grinch slippers, embrace winter fashion. The rich fabrics, multiple layers and thick coats somehow add a warm feel to the subzero temperatures. Sip some hot cocoa or sled down massive hills with friends. Remember: You don't have to sacrifice style for warmth.
