Bleu a foodie's paradise
Sept. 2, 2008
Situated downtown next to The Tiger, Bleu is a foodie's paradise. The menu features a gourmet sampling of American and international favorites including sinfully delicious fried green tomatoes with buttermilk cucumber sauce, fancy macaroni and cheese that incorporates white truffle oil and Kansas City Buffalo and Chicken Apple Sausage sliders - and those aren't even entrees.
The menu also includes "Small" and "Big" sections. At Bleu, the dining style is similar to a European café; you don't have to follow the tried and true method of salad then dinner.
From the "Small" section I tried the samosas, crispy football-shaped dumplings filled with cheese and veggies and served with a refreshing mango cucumber relish. The "Big" section features some heavier selections like goat cheese gnocchi, Tasmanian salmon and braised short ribs. From the sandwich selection, I'd recommend the banh mi, a Vietnamese-style pork po'boy with hoisin sauce, cucumber and two types of aioli served with fresh Yukon Gold fries and specialty ketchup.
In addition to stellar food, Bleu makes everything in-house and from scratch. Yes, that includes breads, sauces, pastas and even the bitters for their specialty drinks.
Speaking of drinks, Bleu boasts a remarkable wine bar and tasty concoctions to wet your whistle like the Brazilian Berry drink made with fresh berries, lime and Brazilian rum.
Bleu offers its patrons an upper echelon dining experience, but its prices are moderate considering the quality. Each course is priced separately and ranges from $4 for freshly fried Yukon Gold chips with bleu cheese and chive crème fraîche to $24 for grilled Tasmanian salmon. The wine is served in 3- and 6-ounce portions, allowing you to sample more than one.
