“Waking Sleeping Beauty,” directed by Don Hahn, is a behind the scenes look at Disney animation during its tumultuous slump and consequential rebirth during the 80’s and early 90’s.

Hahn’s film describes the passion, anger, trials and tribulations that went in to making such blunders as “The Black Cauldron” and such masterpieces as “Aladdin” and “The Lion King,” providing detailed backgrounds of movies we all loved as children.

Peter Schneider, former VP of Disney’s animation department and producer of the film, said the impact of the people that were a part of Disney during the filming of “Waking Sleeping Beauty” still resonate in today’s animation landscape.

“If you look at this period of time, everyone that was making movies now was there,” Schnieder said.

“Waking Sleeping Beauty” is more than an entertaining documentary. It is a history lesson of the rise of animated movies and the shaping of the industry, as we know it.
