Bramble takes boy band folk to the streets
The True/False Film Fest isn’t just about the films. Bands from around the country flock to True/False to be a part of the festival. Meet Bramble, a folk band from Salt Lake City, Utah.
“We heard (of True/False) through our friends here in Columbia a while back,” banjo and charango player James Miska said outside the Ragtag Cinema on Friday afternoon. “They were gracious enough to pass on our music to the director of the festival to promote the idea of us coming here and to play the festival. And then we were chosen by the directors to come out here.”
Miska said the band had already played before numerous films in addition to playing on the street.
“We’re busking the hell out of the sidewalks,” Miska said. “Any moment that we’re not required to play for True/False, we’re just going to use that time to play on the sidewalks.”
Bramble is made up of Miska, Steven Schmit (percussion,) Chaz Prymak (guitar) and Ian Accord (accordion). Accord said the band was formed after Miska and Prymak biked from Seattle to San Diego, playing gigs on their way down the coast.
“We’ve been described as a lot of different things: folk, gypsy, bluegrass with a touch of boy band,” Accord said. He and Miska said being called a boy band wasn’t an insult.
Look for Bramble on the streets of Columbia and playing before films on Saturday and Sunday and seeing movies when they can.
“We’re not going to catch all the movies we want to catch,” Accord said. “There are so many good movies.”
Bramble will end their weekend Sunday at 9:15 p.m. at the Missouri Theatre, playing Buskers Last Stand.
