Campaign mode? What's that?

This week, “Call of Duty: Black Ops” was released. You can expect the main reason why people bought the game was to reassume their dominance over each other in the already-hacked multiplayer. So, one must ask the question: Why is there still a campaign mode in this game?

In “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare,” players met the badass Captain Price, a man who can command a squadron like no other. Along with the main character, “Soap” MacTavish, Price and his team led us through multiple locations across the globe in an effort to stop terrorists.

As intriguing as it sounds, I believed not a lot of people played the campaign story. I remember a few polls on 1up.com and gameinformer.com that showed most people started the multiplayer when they first received the game. If people are going to play multiplayer right off the bat, then the campaign has no real purpose in the game.

Despite all this, some campaign stories do have controversial issues, which make their way into the headlines. The most famous example is in “Modern Warfare 2” in the level titled “No Russian.” In this level, the player was undercover and part of a terrorist group. As part of the mission, the player shoots innocent civilians at a Russian airport. Needless to say, the level itself was full of bad reputations from the beginning -- especially in a post 9/11 era. Although it did make headlines, it only was a big story for only a couple of weeks. Multiplayer DLC took the spotlight since the majority of gamers were in multiplayer anyway.

It’s very easy to tell what games are best for campaign or multiplayer. “Call of Duty” is a multiplayer game, hands down. If you asked anyone on the street about the events in the campaign mode in the series, I’m betting a majority of people will say they don’t remember what happened or they didn’t play the campaign at all. My advice? Take it out. It’s simply a filler and part of an even bigger excuse to sell the game. Even though everyone sees the trailers on TV that show the campaign mode, many of them are just interested about the new perks, guns and achievements on multiplayer. The campaign is worthless. Stick to multiplayer, but only when the bugs are fixed and the cheaters are gone.
