Super Bowl snack solutions for every celebration
After days of searching for entertainment in the Snowpocalypse, the Super Bowl parties sure to ensue this weekend will be a welcome form of entertainment.
It doesn’t matter if you’re watching for the commercials or the game, if it requires driving and seeing people other than your roommates, it’ll probably be the most exciting thing you’ve done all week. And what goes better with football games than yummy half-time snacks?
According to About.com, not much. Americans consumed an estimated 8 million pounds of guacamole and 14,500 tons of chips during Super Bowl XXXV.
The Gloucester Times reports that Super Bowl Sunday is only second to Thanksgiving in American consumption, and we consume 90 million pounds of chicken wings.
Enough about the gluttonous facts, here are some yummy game day recipes:
The All Recipes website has an entire section dedicated to Super-Bowl-worthy recipes. You can view their top recipes and watch how-to videos, if you’re not a culinary genius.
For a more traditional crowd-pleasing recipe, I recommend the Seven Layer Taco Dip with tortilla chips.
For a more adventurous crowd, try the Avocado Feta Salsa with tortilla chips and pita bread.
Serious Eats also has an extensive section for Super Bowl recipes. Their main dish selection is better than other sites that focus mostly on appetizers. If you have a vegetarian crowd, try this chili, or if there aren’t any dietary restrictions to be followed, try bacon cheeseburger quesadillas.
For a sweeter Super Bowl-themed treat, try baking team-flavored cupcakes, such as these from Astoria
Although you probably won’t get professional team logos printed before Sunday, grocery and craft supply stores around Columbia have generic football decorations to help with any creative endeavors.
If you won’t be venturing to Buffalo Wild Wings for your game day festivities, it’s totally worth it to try this boneless buffalo wing from Delish. It’s a slightly healthier version, and who likes the bones anyway? If you absolutely insist on greasy buffalo wings, try these [buffalo wings] (http://find.myrecipes.com/recipes/recipefinder.dyn?action=displayRecipe&recipe_id=10000002011109) from My Recipes.
Southern Living has an article dedicated to Super Bowl appetizers, full of photos and outsourced recipes. If you don’t like their wing recipe and want something that sounds more cultured, try the Beer and Cheddar Fondue, which actually sounds pretty tasty. Who wouldn’t want to cover their food with beer and cheese?
For those of you who are partying sans kitchen, try the TGI Friday’s frozen appetizers from one of the many grocers in town. Most can be cooked in a microwave if you don’t have an oven, and they’ll work better for a Super Bowl watch in your dorm than making a trip to Mizzou Market.
If you’d rather go out than attend a house party, local Columbia venues are hosting plenty of Super Bowl deals. For instance, Harpo’s has its $1 menu available until 9 p.m. and half price drinks, and Shiloh Bar and Grill is selling cheap wings.
