Ten reasons why the 'man bag' is perfectly acceptable
-
Think of it as a briefcase with more space. It won’t make you look like you’re carrying around a glorified folder with a handle.
-
Who wants to wear a tacky backpack? Honestly.
-
Man bags can be carried in hand or, if a strap is included, can function in a messenger bag fashion.
-
Whether you’re carrying your five-star résumé or your one o’clock purchase from Subway, people will wonder what you’re lugging in that sleek bag.
-
It holds basically any necessity — from your sunglasses to your umbrella, your Blackberry to your Radica 20 Questions game (Face it. Some of us cannot put that damn thing down).
-
You don’t have to be, or even appear to be, a businessman to carry one.
-
Ladies dig men who are confident in their masculinity. Although closely related and much mistaken, carrying said “man bag” is not nearly the same as carrying a purse.
-
You’ll have room for a snack, possibly a small lunch.
-
If you catch any lip from a passer-by about your man bag, just remember that you aren’t the schlub with bulging pockets. You have more dignity in your fashion than that.
-
The man bag is a fashion statement. Instead of wild colors and a multitude of C’s, though, men should choose a bag in fine leather or with a neutral print, maybe plaid or stripes. Sophisticated > loud.

This should be added to your chain of importance-- Practical > sophisticated > loud. Sorry, I have no issues with carrying backpacks, and I don't think they are 'tacky' in the college campus context. Elsewhere, if actually a professional, maybe I'd reconsider the backpack. But I see no need to be carrying chic manbags over backpacks.
