CMAs win most tacky dressed award show
During the past few years, music award shows have produced some of fashion's most memorable moments. In the '90s, we saw celebrities who weren’t afraid to flaunt it. Most notably, Lil' Kim and her pasty and Christina Auguliera with a bandanna wrapped around her chest. Now, as we creep into the 2010s, we see celebrities shining with eccentric, unique attire, forcing designers to push the label. Although Lady GaGa is an easy target, there are several other artists, such as Imogen Heap, who had a dress custom made to update on their own Twitter feed.
Music awards shows give us the star's true personalities. Through the pictures, we begin to expect a certain presence about them on the red carpet. Unfortunately, this year's Country Music Awards showed us failure across the board. More interesting, as country music continues to fight the increasingly popular and somewhat new genre of pop, perhaps the poor attire is a reflection of the country music industry and the artist that rely on it.
Kellie Pickler, who is only 24 years old, sported a beautiful gold dress with a very sexy, plunging neckline. But her hair and makeup reflected someone who was twice her age. Julianne Hough appeared in what looked like a dress made of dead crows (something more fitting for Lady GaGa) and seemed to only disappear in the dress as she strolled the red carpet. Martina McBride’s dress was too short and very unflattering, but did not look nearly as tacky as Gretchen Wilson, who chose a black sweater dress to rock on the red carpet. Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meister had a beautiful tear drop dress but looked tired and exhausted with no makeup as she took pictures.
Taylor Swift looked drab and colorless in a plain red dress -- something that seemed out of character for the always bright and blossoming star. But the worse outfit of the night definitely goes to American Idol alum and hostess Carrie Underwood. Her dress appeared to have several tiers of a sparkly flower, more fitted at the bottom and like a tutu toward the torso.
The only artists that embraced the red carpet and looked like they were at an award show were the members of Lady Antebellum and Kimberly Williams-Paisely. Lady Antebellum strutted in classic black tuxes and a beautiful red dress with a dramatic neckline, perfect for the CMAs while Paisely wore a simple blue gown that seemed to flow perfectly as she took pictures.
Award season never really ends, so all these stars have time to redeem themselves. Hopefully.
