The Dynamites featuring Charles Walker play from the soul

There is a party in Peace Park and it’s only 3 p.m. The Dynamites featuring Charles Walker are telling its audience to get off their cozy lawn chairs move their feet. The funky group, complete with horns, strings and soulful vocals, is stopping in Columbia before its new tour is launched in Australia.

The Dynamites have a classic R&B sound with a mixture of other styles. They leave hints of funk, reggae, soul and jazz for its audience to get groovy to. The band is energetic wailing to the crowd with deep exclamations of “yeah” and “oh” to reinforce its tunes about love and soul.

“I’m talking about the blues y'all," Walker said. "I know some of y'all have the blues.

The crowd is a mixture of young and old standing close and twisting, swaying or at least bobbing along.

Rusty Shakelford of Kirksville describes his dance style as uninhibited. And his friend David Linhares is in front riling up the people around him.

It’s a breezy day, making it chilly enough to bring a backup sweater. Walker tells the crowd to warm them hands up by throwing them in the air. The Dynamites play the classics including Jr. Walker and songs off its newest album, Burn It Down. The group has the James Brown/Motown feel of a new era. These guys have definitely got roots. If you happen to head on over to join the party don’t forget your blues shoes.
