Blue Note Records '70th Anniversary Tour' comes to Columbia
In 1939, Alfred Lion launched Blue Note Records, one of the most prolific jazz labels of all time. For 30 years, the label was the home of genre-defining, oft-imitated acts like John Coltrane and Miles Davis.
Now entering their 70th year, seven of the most talented artists in jazz are joining together on a cross-country tour to celebrate the label's past, present and future. The tour stops by Columbia on this Thursday a the Missouri Theatre, part of the "We Always Swing" Jazz Series.
According to the Series' Web site, acts will include:
Bill Charlap as pianist and music director
Tenor saxophonist Ravi Coltrane
Alto and soprano saxophonist and flutist Steve Wilson
Trumpeter Nicholas Payton
Guitarist Peter Bernstein
Bassist Peter Washington
Drummer Lewis Nash
They will be performing pieces by Bobby Hutcherson, McCoy Tyner, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, Cedar Walton, Joe Henderson and others.
